When Andy Warhol created the colour serigraphs in the 1960s and 1970s, the prints quickly became such a great success that his printing company decided to print and sell further copies in the original colour and size without authorisation.
When Andy Warhol became aware of this, he decided against destroying these additional copies, but decreed that these originally illegal copies had to be stamped "Published by Sunday B. Morning" and "Fill in your own signature" on the verso. Thus marked, they were legitimised for sale.
The colours of the stamps provide information about the relative dating of the prints: The early "Sunday B. Morning" reprints, whose production began during Warhol's lifetime, were stamped in black ink. More recent prints have the stamp in blue ink to make the temporal difference clear.
