Stiftung Keramion in Frechen and Van Ham Art Estate present "Friedrich Gräsel. Keramik & Industrie"

From 26 October 2023 to 18 February 2024, the Keramion Foundation in Frechen will present the exhibition "Friedrich Gräsel. Ceramics & Industry" curated by Dr. Alexandra Apfelbaum. This catalogue presents the carefully curated selection of ceramic works from the most important work groups between 1952 and 2002, which not only demonstrate Gräsel's joy in experimenting with materials from industrial production, but also his preoccupation with their aesthetics and function, as well as his artistic treatment of them. The "tube", whether handcrafted or industrially produced, remained Gräsel's defining motif throughout his life. Find these works for sale through our Art Store.

Since 2015, VAN HAM Art Estate has represented the artistic estate of Friedrich Gräsel. For further information on the artist and VAN HAM Art Estate, please visit the official Homepage.

The sculptor Friedrich Gräsel (1927 - 2013) is one of the best-known representatives of abstract geometric art. His sculptures have left their mark on the public spaces of many cities in the Rhine-Ruhr region and can be found in the Kunstmuseum Bonn, the Sprengel Museum Hannover and the Museum Folkwang Essen, among others. In 1969 he founded the well-known artists' group "B1" together with Günther Dohr, Kuno Gonschior, Ewerdt Hilgemann and Ferdinand Spindel, among others. In 1972, he made the German contribution to "Sculpture in the City" on the occasion of the 36th Venice Biennale.

In the early days, Gräsel produced figurative and vegetal ceramic works, including baroque-looking faiences that assert their proximity to folk art and peasant ceramics. Starting from ceramics, Gräsel found his creative focus in the motif of the tube and its combination of art and industry.

The urbanity of the 1970s inspired Gräsel to create sculptures in metal and ceramics. Industrially manufactured products with technical functions are translated into free, aesthetic compositions. Many of his works are variable and can be turned, pinned or arranged into ever new formations.
