BACKER, JACOB ADRIAENZ
1608 Harlingen - 1651 Amsterdam
Workshop
Title: Head of an Elderly Gentleman in Clerical Garb.
Technique: Oil on canvas.
Mounting: Relined.
Measurement: 68 x 60cm.
Frame: Framed.
Provenance:
Private ownership, Germany.
The present motif of the portrait of an elderly gentleman in profile goes back to two versions by Jacob Backer, one in the Dresden Gemäldegalerie, the other in the Hermitage in St Petersburg. The proximity to the St Petersburg work is particularly clear, as the sitter is also depicted in priestly robes.
Cf. W. Sumowski: Gemälde der Rembrandt-Schüler, volume I., Landau 1983, p. 221f, no. 18/19.
We thank Peter van den Brink, Valkenburg, for his kind assistance in the cataloguing of the present work.
