The service from which this plate is taken was commissioned in 1893 for the palace in Tsarkoye Selo and was the most extensive and important service created in the Imperial Porcelain Manufacture. The designs are based on Raphael's frescoes in the loggias of the Vatican, which were later reproduced by Quarenghi in the Winter Palace during the reign of Catherine the Great.
