On the occasion of the 60th anniversary of Karl Hofer's death, VAN HAM Art Publications presents the catalogue raisonné of Karl Hofer's sketchbooks on 21 May 2015. The preliminary work on Hofer's works on paper by Karl Bernhard Wohlert, who already compiled the Catalogue Raisonné of Karl Hofer's paintings, was revised by Prof. Dr. Dr. Gerd Presler.
Karl Hofer left behind seventeen sketchbooks. Six more burned when bombs hit his studio in Berlin on 1 March 1943. Of these, only eight individual sheets have survived. As things stand at present, 641 sketchbook sketches represent this part of his oeuvre. Previously unpublished, the sketchbooks open up a completely new view of the artist's work. Created between 1910 and the 1950s, Hofer is encountered here - only here - as it were "privately", detached from all obligations, turned solely to himself and his actions. In the sketchbook he can set down his deepest feelings, his rage and resignations, struggles and objections, his impulses and decisions - without having to take anything or anyone into consideration.
