CHAGALL, MARC
1887 Vitebsk - 1985 St. Paul de Vence
Title: Die Jakobsleiter.
Date: 1965.
Technique: Watercolour, gouache and India ink on VERITABLE PAPIER D'ARCHE SATINE (blind stamp).
Measurement: 76 x 56.5cm.
Notation: Signed lower right: MARC ChAgAll.
Frame/Pedestal: Craftman's frame.
The work is accompanied by a copy of an expert opinion from the Comité Marc Chagall, Paris, dated 15 August 1987. The work is registered there under the number D 656.
Provenance:
- Galerie Francaise, Munich
- Private collection Southern Germany (since 1998)
- Depiction of one of the most important biblical stories, a recurring theme in Chagall's oeuvre
- The reduced colour panel with its deliberately placed white accents underlines the atmospheric character of the depicted dream scene of Jacob.
- For Chagall, the bible was one of the greatest sources of poetry and his biblical images less religious representation than poetic expression of universality
