Bernard Schultze's painting is unthinkable without drawing, and he is a masterful draughtsman. From the most filigree meshes of lines to powerful dark accentuations, one can trace both the range of technical possibilities of the medium and the genesis of an oeuvre that constantly oscillates between automatic transcription - the "anarchic growth" - and actively controlling intervention by the artist.
